The right evidence, for the actual journey.

Pet travel documentation

Organize international pet travel documents: identification, veterinary preparation, certificates, permits and timing, with current official source links.

Itinerary-specific review. No automatic booking or travel guarantee.

Build a requirement map for the actual move.

Pet travel documentation is not a universal bundle. Identify the animal’s species, origin, destination, transit locations, travel history and movement circumstances first. Then use the relevant government authority and operating carrier to establish the required evidence and timing.

This worldwide guide explains how to organize the questions. It does not issue documents, certify eligibility or replace a veterinarian, animal-health authority or wildlife authority. A previous journey’s documents may not be valid for a new movement.

Read the primary guidance: USDA APHIS: Travel With a Pet, European Union / Your Europe: EU rules on travelling with pets and other animals. Rules apply only within each source’s stated jurisdiction or airline scope. Reviewed 3 November 2026; reconfirm before travel.

Evidence that may need review.

Identification
Check whether a microchip or another identification method is required, and how identity must connect to the records and timing.
Vaccination, testing and treatment
Ask which measures apply to this animal and itinerary, in what order, and whether waiting periods or validity windows apply.
Health certification
Confirm who may prepare the certificate, whether official endorsement is required and which destination format applies.
Entry and movement permissions
Check permits, owner-travel conditions, movement purpose, pet-number limits and any inspection or quarantine arrangements.
Wildlife controls
For protected or exotic animals, ask the relevant national CITES authorities about species-specific restrictions and permits separately from animal-health requirements.

Read the primary guidance: GOV.UK: Bringing your pet dog, cat or ferret to Great Britain, Environment and Climate Change Canada: Endangered species and the international traveller, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service: 3-200-46: Import/Export/Re-Export of Personal Pets under CITES and/or WBCA. Rules apply only within each source’s stated jurisdiction or airline scope. Reviewed 3 November 2026; reconfirm before travel.

Work backwards from the intended travel date.

  1. Identify the official pathway and any eligibility restriction before booking.
  2. Ask your veterinarian about the preparation sequence and appointment requirements.
  3. Record each test, treatment, permit and certificate deadline with its source and responsible person.
  4. Check the operating airline’s document and container acceptance process for all sectors.
  5. Reconfirm the plan when dates, route, ownership or the animal’s circumstances change.

Some destination processes can take months; there is no reliable worldwide “seven-day certificate” rule. Do not assume every move is quarantine-free or that one passport covers all destinations and species.

Use official sources within their scope.

These official examples illustrate how entry requirements differ. Select the relevant authority for your actual journey and check its latest instructions, including any transit requirements.
