Pet transport by air within India
Plan pet travel by air within India. Review airline acceptance, containers, documents and handover questions for dogs and cats before requesting a quote.
Eligibility and written scope require review. An enquiry is not a booking.
Understand the arrangement before choosing a flight.
Pet transport by air within India depends on the operating airline, animal, container, route and booking arrangement. A passenger seat reservation does not automatically reserve space for a pet. Confirm the current acceptance process before purchasing tickets or a carrier.
Cabin, accompanied checked-baggage and cargo arrangements are different. Which is available depends on the carrier and itinerary; it cannot be inferred from another airline’s rules or a previous journey. Air India’s current policy, for example, identifies domesticated dogs and cats and separates travel categories. That policy is carrier-specific, not a guarantee that every Indian flight accepts pets.
If a booking involves another operating airline or a connection, check every sector. A connecting itinerary that suits a passenger may not be available for an animal. International movements belong in the international pet air transport guide, where origin, transit and destination rules need additional review.
Six checks before making a commitment.
- Animal eligibility. Confirm species, breed, age and any current restrictions with the operating carrier. Do not assume birds or other species use dog/cat rules.
- Travel suitability. Ask your veterinarian about fitness and individual care concerns. Medication decisions belong to a veterinarian; do not sedate a pet based on website advice.
- Container review. Prepare the animal’s measurements and proposed carrier dimensions. Ask how construction, ventilation, security and fit will be assessed.
- Documents. Ask the operating airline which health, vaccination, identity or other records apply to the actual journey, who issues them and when they must be valid.
- Booking and check-in. Confirm capacity, animal acceptance steps, terminal, check-in timing and who is responsible for accompanying or presenting the pet.
- Destination handover. Confirm release, collection and receiving-person arrangements, plus the contact plan if dates or flights change.
A suitable container is more than a label.
Measure the animal in a natural standing position and discuss the intended carrier with the operating airline before purchase. The animal needs appropriate space and a container suitable for the method of carriage. General IATA pet-travel guidance is a starting point; operating-carrier and applicable state requirements still need confirmation.
IATA does not certify a particular crate or relocation company merely because a seller describes it as “approved”. Container guidance for dogs and cats is not a substitute for species-specific review. Ask how your pet can become familiar with an appropriate container before travel, and obtain feeding and water instructions from the veterinarian and carrier.
Keep document copies and necessary contacts available for the agreed handover process. Do not place sensitive medical or identity information into the first enquiry’s free-text notes.
Compare the complete preparation and travel scope.
Separate airline carriage, container supply, veterinary work, collection/delivery, terminal handling and any service fees. Confirm what is included and what is payable directly to another provider. The domestic pet cost guide provides a comparison worksheet without inventing a universal tariff.
Weather, capacity, aircraft, pet condition or document changes can affect acceptance. Ask for a written contingency and cancellation scope before making commitments. This guide does not establish a carrier partnership, guaranteed flight, medical clearance or a fixed welfare outcome.
For a Delhi departure, retain the Delhi pet relocation page for the local enquiry context. For another domestic origin, use the national domestic hub. List the actual locations privately; a place mentioned online is not proof of a local office or immediate availability.
